Week 4 - Educational blogs

I found the following two educational blogs:

1. http://kuieck.edublogs.org/ - This blog is really well set out with an update section, a class calendar showing the main items for each day which are embedded with additional information (for example, homework and assignment due dates), a class newsletter, and a bookshelf which includes details of three books including a description of the book (and links to a separate blog named "shelfari"). The class is a year 2 class.

2. http://sacschoolblogs.org/oakridge2010 - this blog is for older students (years 5/6) and includes a survey for the students about what they already know so the teacher can use this information to address gaps in knowledge. The blog has information about how to navigate within the blog, and has excellent links to skill development websites (such as games, typing, mathematical puzzles - which keeps score).

Week 4

Barone, D., & Wright, T. E. (2008). Literacy instruction with digital and media technologies. The Reading Teacher, 62(4), 292-302
This article contains a number of ideas and activities that are useful to teachers wanting to use technology in their teaching. The article is about a fourth grade classroom where the students use laptops to learn literacy. There is a class webpage that contains files that the students can use (pictures, video) for their work. As well, the teacher puts corrected work on the webpage so students can see marks for their work. The class also has a blog page to discuss books they are reading.
Pericles, K. (2008). Happily blogging @ Belmore South. SCAN, 27(2), 4-6
This article contains ideas about how blogging can be used in the classroom. A group of students has created their own blog to keep people informed of football results. Other students create a photographic montage for inclusion on their blog. Another student works alone completing the next instalment of her book, which she places on her blog for review by her friends.
Can I copy material from the internet for research?
Yes, material can be copied for research, if use is fair and reasonable.
What constitutes research and fair use?
Research is defined as "diligent and systematic enquiry or investigation into a subject in order to discover facts or principles...". Fair use is considered as a reasonable portion of the work - about 10% of words or a single chapter.
Can students ( university or school ) use music in videos that they make?
Copyright of sound recordings lasts 70 years from when it was first created. However, most primary and secondary schools have a joint licence agreement with AMCOS (Australasian Mechanical Copyright Owners' Society) and ARIA (the Australian Record industry Association) that allows them to make certain video and audio recordings of music, including recorded music.

Review of Digital and Literacy video - 7 min

This is a mashup/remix video that outlines a number of issues regarding digital media and copyright issues that relate to remixing of videos and downloading of music.  Copyright laws are not keeping up with technology/cultural change and the video promotes the view that without change there will be a generation of "criminals" illegally downloading and using other people's material.

New literacies relate to technology, especially digital technology, and how the elements of audio, visual and spatial are used together to develop a product.
